Exopolysaccharides produced by bacteria isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal vents: new agents with therapeutic potential ArchiMer
Colliec-jouault, Sylvia; Zanchetta, P; Helley, D; Ratiskol, Jacqueline; Sinquin, Corinne; Fischer, A. M.; Guezennec, Jean.
Bacterial polysaccharides offer fascinating potential applications for the pharmaceutical industry. Although many known marine bacteria produce exopolysaccharides (EPS), continuation in looking for new polysaccharide-producing micro-organisms is promising. Marine bacteria, isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal vents, have demonstrated their ability to produce in aerobic conditions, unusual EPS. With the aim of discovering biological activities, EPS presenting different structural features were studied. An EPS secreted by Vibrio, diabolicus was evaluated on the restoration of bone integrity in experimental model and was demonstrated to be a strong bone-healing material. Another EPS produced by Alteromonas infernus was modified in order to obtain new...

Osseointegration of Hydroxyapatite Implants in Rat Tibial Defects with Sciatic Nerve Injury International Journal of Morphology
da Cunha,Marcelo Rodrigues; Laraia,Isabela Ortiz; Franco,Guacira R; Miguel,Natalia N; Maciel,Ana A; dos Santos,Geovane Ribeiro; Isayama,Ricardo Noboro.
Bone metabolism is influenced by different factors and muscle activity acts as a stimulator of bone plasticity. Conditions such as nerve injuries can compromise bone physiology due to muscle inactivity. Preview studies have shown that nerve damage reduces P substance and calcitonin gene-related peptides, also known as neuropeptides that may have a key role on bone healing. Therefore, this study evaluated the osseointegration of hydroxyapatite implants in tibial defects of rats submitted to unilateral sciatic nerve section. Twelve Wistar rats were divided into two groups (G1 and G2). In G1, the sciatic nerve was left intact and in G2 the left sciatic nerve was completely sectioned. An experimental tibial bone defect was then created in both groups and...

The Effect of Dietary Supplements on Healing of Alloplastic Bone Grafted Defects in Rat Tibia International Journal of Morphology
Kaya,A; Aktas,A; Akdemir,M. F; Kaya,B; Deveci,E.
The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the potential effects of the systemically delivered combination of calcium, zinc and vit-d supplementation of the locally applied alloplastic bone graft. 28 male Wistar albino rats were used in this study. In each animal, bone defects (10 mm length ¥ 3 mm width ¥ 2 mm depth) were created in the tibias. The animals were divided into four groups. In Group 1 (Control Group) rats were fed with standard rat diet. In Group 2 (Calcium Group) rats received calcium carbonate (15 mg/kg body weight) suspended in saline. In Group 3 (Calcium/Zinc Group) rats received calcium carbonate (15 mg/kg body weight) and zinc sulfate (4 mg/kg body weight) suspended in saline. In Group 4 (Calcium/Vitamin D Group) rats received calcium...
